Supermarket 'chicken wine' dupes vs original: one is a close call
Supermarket chicken wine dupes vs original: one close call

Rachel Williams, Fashion & Beauty Writer, put three supermarket 'chicken wine' dupes head-to-head against the viral La Vieille Ferme Rosé, and one came remarkably close to matching the original.

La Vieille Ferme Rosé, nicknamed 'chicken wine' thanks to its poultry-inspired label, has become a summer favourite. Typically costing around £8 or £9 for a 75cl bottle, it proves that premium-style wine need not be expensive.

As with many viral products, the rosé has spawned several supermarket 'dupes'. To test whether they can compete, Williams purchased bottles from Asda, Lidl and Aldi, comparing them side by side.

How the wines were compared

To ensure fairness, Williams poured a relatively small glass of each bottle. Lined up, there was virtually zero difference in colour, with every glass boasting the delicate pale pink hue that borders on white wine.

La Vieille Ferme Rosé: the original

Price: £8.75 - £9
Where to buy: Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Asda and Tesco

The original is a dry rosé, not overly sweet, ideal for those with a more refined palate. Its aroma brings fresh red berries with a slight undertone of acidity. The taste is clean, elegant and incredibly easy to drink, making it perfect for picnics or garden gatherings. Rating: 5/5

La P'tite Pierre: the closest rival

Price: £6.74 - £7.50
Where to buy: Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons

This South French wine, the only bottle without a rooster on the label, was almost borderline identical in taste. Boasting a fruity but dry profile, it was surprisingly well balanced and easy to drink, with just a touch more sweetness than the original. Rating: 4.5/5

Le Petit Poulet: Aldi's mixed verdict

Price: £6.29
Where to buy: Aldi

Aldi's version, popular on TikTok, looks almost identical with a similar label and colour. However, Williams found the aroma a little more synthetic and harsh on the nose. The taste was not bad, but it 'matured' the longer the bottle was opened, so it might benefit from breathing. Juicy strawberry notes were present, but it was sweeter than La Vieille Ferme. Rating: 3/5

The Farmyard: Lidl's light option

Price: £6.29
Where to buy: Lidl

This 12.5% ABV rosé, with two French-themed chickens on the label, is less sweet on the nose than Aldi's rival but still stronger and fruitier than the original. It remains dry, light on the palate, with bursts of summer fruits and a hint of herbs, though it has a slight acidy aftertaste. Rating: 4/5

Final verdict

All the 'chicken wines' are quite drinkable, but the OG remains a go-to. However, La P'tite Pierre comes close, keeping the freshness and delicacy of the original. At £6.74, it is the most expensive dupe, but that's less than a 20p difference compared to Aldi and Lidl at £6.29. Compared to La Vieille Ferme's highest price of £9, this supermarket French wine could save over £2 a bottle while offering a similar taste.

Aldi and Lidl's versions are not bad, but they are a touch sweeter overall, which might be worth considering for those who prefer a dry rosé.
