A £1.69 bag of soda crystals proved more effective than white vinegar for cleaning oven glass, shower glass and limescale in the toilet, leaving surfaces gleaming with minimal effort.
White vinegar is widely regarded as a top household cleaner, but during a cleaning session, one writer swapped it for soda crystals and found the results were significantly better.
Oven glass transformed
The oven glass was the most neglected area, having been cleaned only a handful of times in four years. A thick paste made from soda crystals and water was applied generously to the glass and left for about an hour.
Using a coarser cloth in circular motions, the dirt lifted instantly. After rinsing and repeating, the glass looked brand new.
Toilet and shower limescale tackled
Soda crystals also combated limescale in the toilet bowl. Several cups were sprinkled into and around the bowl, left for an hour, then scrubbed with an old toothbrush. The result was a spotless bowl without harsh chemicals.
The same paste method worked on shower glass, removing soap and water marks to reveal a shine that is usually hard to achieve.
