A lifestyle reporter has swapped white vinegar for a £1.79 natural household item from Home Bargains, claiming towels come out of the wash noticeably cleaner and softer. The item, Dri-Pak Soda Crystals, is placed directly into the washing machine drum instead of the detergent drawer.
Why soda crystals beat vinegar
White vinegar has long been a go-to remedy for soft towels, as its mild acidity breaks down washing powder residue and acts as a natural fabric softener. However, the reporter switched to soda crystals several years ago, believing they work considerably better — a view shared by cleaning experts.
Soda crystals are a naturally occurring salt with high alkalinity, making them highly effective at breaking down fabric conditioner and various oils. They strip away stubborn soapy, oily build-up from towels without the need for harsh cleaning products that risk discolouring or damaging fabric.
How to use soda crystals for towels
The reporter washes towels separately from clothing and bedding, as clothes shed lint that can attach to towels. A scoop of soda crystals is placed into the drum along with a single laundry detergent pod before loading the towels.
Fabric softener should be avoided when washing towels, as it can lead to a greasy soap residue accumulating. The washing machine is set to a hot 60-degree cycle to give towels a proper clean and eliminate bacteria, followed by an extra rinse cycle to remove any soap residue released from the towels.
Drying and longevity
After washing, towels are hung outside to dry in the sun at this time of year. If outdoor drying is not an option, placing towels on an airer with a dehumidifier is recommended.
The reporter notes some of her towels are now nearly 10 years old, yet they remain far from the rough, stiff texture that might be expected at that age.
