Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in the United Kingdom have reached a new record in the first quarter of 2026, driven by increasing consumer choice and the appeal of significantly lower running costs compared to traditional petrol-powered cars. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported a 32 per cent surge in full Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales, totalling 86,943 units. Despite this growth, electric vehicles still represent only 4.3 per cent of the overall used car market.
Record Demand for Used EVs
Industry experts, including SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes, highlighted a record demand for used electric vehicles. Hawes attributed this trend partly to persistently high fuel prices, which have made EVs cheaper to recharge and run than their petrol counterparts. He urged policymakers to provide continued support to maintain this momentum and accelerate the transition to cleaner transport.
Rising Petrol Costs Boost EV Appeal
Rising petrol costs, exacerbated by global political tensions, have made electric vehicles more financially attractive. Consumers are increasingly opting for EVs to save hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds annually on ownership and running expenses. The cost advantage is particularly pronounced for drivers who can charge at home or at workplace charging points, where electricity rates are typically lower than public charging tariffs.
New EV sales also saw a significant surge, with a 59 per cent jump in April 2026 alone. This sharp increase indicates that more drivers are switching to electric vehicles as they seek to reduce their exposure to volatile fuel prices. The SMMT data underscores a broader shift in consumer behaviour, with environmental concerns and long-term savings playing a key role in purchasing decisions.
Industry analysts expect the trend to continue as more affordable EV models enter the market and charging infrastructure expands. However, challenges remain, including the need for greater investment in public charging networks and grid capacity to support the growing number of electric vehicles on UK roads.
