A Royal Mail postman has revealed the simple gesture that makes delivery drivers feel truly appreciated and inclined to look after your parcels. It is not about offering drinks or snacks, but something far more practical.
Postman Reeece Perch shared on TikTok: "If you want your postie to love you and look after your parcels, then ask if they need the toilet."
Why your postman will love you
Most postmen and delivery drivers lack convenient toilet access while out on their routes. Reece noted: "If I need the toilet, I have to drive somewhere; I can't just walk to the other side of the office or go to my own bathroom when working from home."
Throughout his career, he has developed strong connections with residents along his delivery route, praising them as wonderful for allowing him toilet access. "Now I can drive round the corner from someone and go for a wee, because I built that relationship with that person," said Reece.
He added that while postal workers are frequently offered refreshments on warm days or snacks, "nine times out of 10," what your postman actually requires is the loo. Reece stated: "They'll be more grateful for that than being offered a drink."
He added: "I promise you that postie will begin to love you, and they'll look after you. They'll put off your parcels in the safest places all the time."
What happens if your parcels can't be delivered
According to Royal Mail, if you are out when your parcel is delivered, several scenarios may unfold depending on the package's dimensions and whether a signature is needed. Certain parcels are too large to fit through a conventional letterbox, which means the postal worker may have to hand them over directly.
Should nobody be present to accept the delivery, Royal Mail will typically attempt another delivery on the following working day. This indicates you might not have to arrange anything immediately, as your package could return to your property the next day.
Nevertheless, should the postal worker remain unsuccessful in delivering the parcel, they'll leave a 'Something for you' card detailing what's occurred. The item will subsequently be taken to a Customer Service Point for collection. Alternatively, recipients may organise for the parcel to be redelivered at a time that suits them better.
