State pensioners are set to receive a series of payments and bill help during the winter months from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). There are four cash payments, and one paid directly to energy suppliers, totalling hundreds of pounds in additional support. This comes as Ofgem's energy price cap is rising by 4% on October 1, pushing average annual bills up for a typical dual-fuel household to £1,723. The cap limits how much suppliers can charge for unit rates (the price per kWh of gas and electricity) and standing charges (the daily fixed fee).
Winter Fuel Payments and Scottish heating payments
Winter Fuel Payments are given to pensioners with an income of £35,000 or below in England and Wales. Payments of £200 for those aged between 66 and 79, or £300 for those aged 80 and over, will be issued automatically later this year to pensioners.
Pensioners with an annual income of £35,000 or more can receive the payment but will need to pay it back through PAYE or Self Assessment. The deadline to opt out of Winter Fuel Payments has now passed; however, pensioners in Scotland can still opt out.
In Scotland, a Pension Age Winter Heating Payment is available. Eligible people over State Pension age living in Scotland will automatically receive a one-off heating payment of up to £316.79. To be eligible for the 2026 payment, you must have been born on or before June 27, 1960. During the qualifying week - Monday, September 21, to Sunday, September 27, 2026, you must also have lived in Scotland on at least the last day of the qualifying week.
Winter Heating Payment and Warm Home Discount
Scotland also offers a Winter Heating Payment, paid from December and through winter each year, with a current payment of £62.00. Those eligible automatically get the single payment from December and through winter. This does not depend on how cold it is.
There is also the Warm Home Discount. The scheme for winter usually opens in October and will give people who receive certain benefits £150 off their electricity bill. The money is paid directly by the DWP to energy suppliers between October and March. Eligible households may also be able to get the discount off their gas bill instead, if their supplier provides them with both gas and electricity.
If you're a credit customer, the £150 will be added to your electricity account, and if you're on Pay As You Go or Prepayment, you'll be sent a voucher that you can use to top up your meter.
DWP Christmas Bonus
The final one-off payment is the DWP Christmas Bonus, a tax-free £10 payment made to people in receipt of the State Pension or other benefits during the qualifying week. This is usually the first full week of December. Nobody needs to apply for the extra £10, as it should automatically be credited to the account where you usually receive your benefit payments. It is issued by the DWP as a separate payment, independent of your scheduled State Pension or benefit payment, so it may arrive on a different day.
