Over-60s freebies and pensioner perks: Pension Credit and other help to check
Over-60s freebies and pensioner perks: Pension Credit and other help

The escalating cost of living continues to heap pressure on households, meaning pensioners require more money than ever to enjoy a comfortable retirement. A swift check can establish whether you are claiming all the free support you could be eligible for, including free NHS prescriptions, eye tests and council tax reductions. The assistance is occasionally dependent solely on your age, though in certain instances you may need to be receiving benefits.

This follows Prime Minister Andy Burnham's announcement of proposals to remove the annual earnings link from the triple lock from 2030, following the next scheduled general election. It will instead track average earnings over time, rather than annually, in what the PM has described as an "adjusted triple lock," reports the Mirror.

State pension and living costs

The full new state pension is currently valued at £241.30 per week, or £12,547.60 annually. However, industry body Pensions UK estimates a single person now requires £13,900 per year for a minimum retirement living standard, or £22,500 for a couple.

This underlines that the state pension on its own is frequently insufficient to meet your fundamental needs. For a comfortable retirement — which would encompass foreign holidays and additional disposable income — this increases to £45,400 annually for a single person, or £62,700 for a couple.

Free NHS prescriptions and eye tests

Those aged 60 or over in England are entitled to free NHS prescriptions. A standard NHS prescription currently costs £9.90 per item in England, while prescriptions are free for everyone living in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Over-60s in England and Wales are also eligible for free NHS eye tests. You are generally entitled to a free test every two years, or more frequently should your optician deem it necessary. A private eye test typically costs between £20 and £25. In Scotland, eye tests are free for all residents.

Dental check-ups and TV licences

Those who claim the guarantee credit element of Pension Credit qualify for free dental check-ups. A standard NHS dental check-up in England typically costs £27.40. In Wales, over-60s receive free dental check-ups, while in Scotland they are free for everyone. Any subsequent treatment may still incur a charge.

Pension Credit claimants aged 75 or over are eligible for a free TV licence, which ordinarily costs £180. Previously, all those over the age of 75 automatically received a free TV licence, but the rules were revised in 2020, making Pension Credit a requirement.

Benefits, bus passes and energy help

Certain benefits exist that are exclusively accessible to those who have reached state pension age, which currently stands at 66 for both men and women, though this is set to rise to 67. Attendance Allowance is granted to those who have reached state pension age and require additional assistance or supervision owing to a disability or illness. It is valued at £76.70 per week for those who need help or supervision during the day, or supervision at night, or £114.60 per week for those who require help or supervision throughout both day and night, or who are nearing the end of their life. Pension Credit is also available, topping up your weekly income to £238 if you are single, or to £363.25 if you are part of a couple.

In England, you can obtain a free bus pass upon reaching state pension age. If you reside in London, you can travel free on buses, tubes and other transport within the capital from the age of 60. Those aged over 60 in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are also entitled to a free bus pass.

A range of energy support schemes are on offer for pensioners. The Winter Fuel Payment, for example, is worth up to £300 and is issued to all those who have surpassed state pension age. However, if your earnings exceed £35,000, the Winter Fuel Payment will be reclaimed by HMRC through the tax system. The Warm Home Discount is also available, providing £150 off your electricity bill for those receiving Pension Credit or on a low income.

You could qualify for a council tax discount if you receive particular benefits such as Pension Credit. The average B and D council tax set by local authorities in England stands at £2,392. In certain circumstances, you may be eligible for a complete exemption from your bill.
