Netflix has increased the cost of all its UK subscription plans. The cheapest standard plan, which includes adverts, now costs £7.99 a month instead of £5.99.
The ad-free standard plan has risen from £12.99 a month to £13.99 a month. The premium plan, which allows streaming across additional devices and the option to add extra members, has gone up from £18.99 to £20.99 a month. The fee for adding an extra member has also increased from £4.99 to £5.99 a month.
New pricing for new and existing subscribers
New customers will face the updated pricing immediately. Existing subscribers will receive one month's notice of the changes via email, according to the Mirror.
A Netflix spokesperson said: "We know members have never had more choices in entertainment, and we're committed to delivering an experience that meets and exceeds their expectations."
How to cut the cost of your subscriptions
Netflix is not alone in raising prices. Disney+ increased its subscription fees last September, and Amazon Video introduced new charges for ad-free viewing in 2024.
For those looking to reduce outgoings, a good starting point is reviewing recent bank statements and auditing all subscription services currently paid for. The typical person holds around three subscriptions, spending roughly £500 per year on them. Cancelling any services no longer used could result in considerable savings.
If you are within a trial period, you can cancel without being charged. If you are within a cooling-off period, you should be able to cancel your membership without issue. Amazon Prime offers a 14-day cooling-off period, whereas Netflix does not. Disney+ allows annual subscribers to cancel within 15 days of a renewal to receive a refund.
Monthly and annual cancellation options
If you pay monthly for a subscription service, you can typically cancel without incurring a penalty fee. You should ordinarily be able to continue using the service until your current paid month ends.
If you paid for the year upfront, whether you receive a refund for the remaining months depends on the terms and conditions of your subscription and when you choose to cancel. For instance, with Amazon Prime, you can obtain a refund provided you have not used any membership benefits. If you only used Amazon Prime for delivery purposes, you may be entitled to a partial refund.
"If the new price doesn't feel worth it, you can downgrade or cancel penalty-free at any time – dropping from standard to the ad-supported plan now saves £6 a month, or £72 a year, if you can live with the adverts."
