A stressed-out resident living in a flat says they cannot sleep because the neighbours above them bang their headboard against the wall most nights, including at 4am. Despite trying to signal their annoyance, the noise has continued, and they are now considering contacting the landlord.
The resident posted on Reddit's Neighbours from Hell forum, describing how the banging travels down the walls and into their own room. "It travels down the walls and into my own room. I hate it, and it wakes me up. They do it late at night, too, past 9pm. 12am. 4am. So annoying," they wrote.
Broom-poking fails to stop the noise
The resident said they have tried to let the neighbours know they are being noisy, but it has not yielded any real results, as the banging continues "most nights." They have resorted to gently poking the ceiling with a broom to signal they can hear, without making it awkward, since nobody in the building talks to each other.
However, they said they are going to have to "talk to the landlord" about it because it is seriously impacting their sleep. The resident explained that they know it is the neighbours' bed because every room is the same and furniture cannot be moved around. Their bedroom is above mine, their kitchen above mine, etc.
Residents suggest solutions
In the comments, some Reddit users pointed out that the neighbours probably know they are being loud and do not care. One wrote: "They almost certainly know it’s loud. Most people who bang the wall every night have been told before or just don’t care. The landlord route is good because it creates a paper trail if it continues."
Another commenter suggested an easy fix: "All they have to do is move the bed away from the wall a little bit. This should be an easy fix. I hope it doesn't turn into a war like I'm involved in. I'm sick of being woken up at 6:30am, so I slept on the couch." A fourth joked about buying tension braces, similar to those used on baby gates, and leaving them on the neighbours' doorstep as a gift.
