A mother of two has revealed a 30-second 'discount layering' method that cut her Tesco shopping bill from £124.05 to £96.77, saving £27.28 in one trip.
How the trick works
Content creator Mercedes, known as @Mumlifewithmercedes on Instagram, demonstrated the method in a new video. She scans her Tesco Clubcard to lower the shelf price, then uses a Blue Light Card Shopping Card at the checkout for an additional discount.
The initial Clubcard scan reduced her original £124.05 total to £100, saving £24.05. Adding the Blue Light Card layer brought an extra £3.23 off, bringing the final bill to £96.77 – a reduction of over 20%.
Eligibility and savings
The 32-year-old NHS assistant practitioner uses a Blue Light Card, which is available to emergency services, NHS, social care, teaching, armed forces workers, and nearly 30 other professions. The Shopping Cards allow members to buy retailer vouchers at a discount, delivered digitally to the app.
Mercedes said: "So many mums spend too much on the food shop. But not enough people know you can layer up your discounts like this." She plans to use the hack on every shop going forward.
Other retailers and expert comment
Blue Light Card Shopping Cards are also available for M&S, Sainsbury's, Iceland, Asda, Morrisons, Farmfoods, and Waitrose.
Joe Mathison, head of strategic partnerships at Blue Light Card, said: "We know how stressful and expensive food shopping can be for parents over the summer break. That's why we want to make sure every member knows how quick and easy it is to save at the checkout using our app. As Mercedes demonstrated, layering up discounts takes just seconds at the till and can save families over £100 across the summer break."
