Marks & Spencer has invested more than £30 million in reducing prices on dozens of food products. The move affects over 65 lines, spanning fresh food to freezer staples, including chips, ketchup, salmon, eggs, cream cheese, and peanut butter.
Remarksable Value and Dropped & Locked
The price cuts include M&S's Remarksable Value range, a core selection of weekly staples benchmarked against competitors, as well as the Dropped & Locked range, which features a wider assortment of products. M&S emphasized that unlike other value ranges, their offerings do not compromise on quality to achieve lower prices.
Competitive Pricing Amid Cost of Living Crisis
The reductions come as grocers intensify price competition, with many households seeking savings due to the cost of living squeeze. Food price inflation remains a significant concern for families, who notice the rising cost of their weekly shop.
In the year ending March 2023, M&S food sales rose 7% to £9.7 billion, though profits from the food division fell 9.6% to £444 million. The retailer reported increased customer numbers and a market share of 4.1%. M&S aims to double its food sales, supported by new store openings, targeting 380 food stores by 2027/28. Last year, 12 new food branches opened, including three converted from former Homebase stores.
Alex Freudmann, managing director of M&S Food, said: “As we double the size of our food business, we are continuing to invest in quality and price to bring the best food to our customers. These price reductions across key family favourites like salmon, eggs and veg are all part of our commitment to help our customers to eat great tasting food every day, without compromise. This is another step on our transformation journey as we reinvest for growth.”
