Will Murray, a chef who once worked at Heston Blumenthal's two Michelin-starred Dinner in Mayfair, has revealed his preferred supermarket curry sauce, and it is neither Patak's nor Sharwood's. Murray, who now co-runs popular London restaurants Fallow, Roe, and FOWL, admitted that his family's home meals are "pretty bog standard" despite his high-end culinary background.
From Michelin Stars to Supermarket Aisles
In an exclusive interview, Murray discussed his family's eating habits, noting that they shop at Tesco and rely on a mix of standard products and local delicacies. He praised Gymkhana curry sauces, calling them "banging." These sauces are produced by the team behind the acclaimed Indian restaurant Gymkhana in Mayfair and are available in supermarkets.
Gymkhana Sauces: A Premium Choice
Gymkhana offers a range of curry sauces including butter masala, tikka masala, Goan curry, madras, rogan josh, and vindaloo, along with marinades and chutneys. The brand promises to bring "the purest flavors of India into your own kitchen." However, this quality comes at a price: a 300ml jar of Gymkhana Goan Curry Cooking Sauce costs £6.75 at Sainsbury's, significantly more than alternatives like Sharwood's Balti Cooking Sauce (420g for £2.65) or Patak's Balti Curry Sauce (450g for £2.45).
Murray's revelation highlights that even top chefs appreciate accessible supermarket options, especially when cooking for a family. He mentioned that his three young children enjoy standard fare like Heck sausages and De Cecco pasta, but for a weekend treat, he turns to Gymkhana's curry sauces to elevate a simple meal.
This endorsement from a chef with Michelin-star experience may encourage home cooks to try these premium sauces, despite the higher cost. The sauces are widely available in UK supermarkets, making them an easy way to add authentic Indian flavours to home cooking.
