Martin Lewis MSE Rare HSBC £220 Bank Switch Deal

Martin Lewis's Money Saving Expert (MSE) has highlighted a rare HSBC bank switching deal offering £220, described as one of the best free cash offers currently available. The finance experts praise this account as fuss-free and accessible to many Brits.

HSBC's £220 Switch Bonus

HSBC has launched the first bank switch deal of 2026 with an upfront cash bonus exceeding £200. In the June 17 MSE newsletter, Martin Lewis noted this rare opportunity for customers willing to switch to HSBC. The HSBC Bank Account is widely available to UK residents.

To qualify, new customers must not have held an HSBC or First Direct current account since January 2023. The deal requires opening an account via the HSBC mobile app or online, completing a full switch within 60 days using the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) with at least two direct debits, depositing £2,000, and spending £500 on the debit card.

Tara Bedelian, head of current accounts at HSBC UK, stated: "With our new £220 incentive, there are more reasons than ever for customers to switch to HSBC UK. The account offers customer-only benefits, including access to Global Money, our multi-currency account with best exchange rates." Once criteria are met, the bonus is paid within 60 days.

Switching Advice

Switching banks is straightforward, with most work handled by the new bank. There is no limit on switches, but most banks pay a bonus only once per customer. A key warning: each application triggers a hard credit search, which remains on file for months.

MSE's Chris Collier cautioned: "Switching banks regularly can affect your ability to get credit, as applications show on your file and may indicate instability. Done sensibly, it's not a big deal, but multiple applications in a short time can look odd." He advised those with major credit plans like mortgages to avoid switching at least six months beforehand.
