Lloyds Bank is closing 23 branches across the UK in October, including a site in South Shields. The branch on King Street is earmarked for closure on October 12, 2026.
A Halifax branch in the North East is also shutting next month. The site on Jackson Street in Gateshead will close on October 19.
Why branches are closing
Lloyds Banking Group, which has owned Halifax since 2009 and is moving all Halifax customers over to Lloyds, says it regularly reviews how people choose to bank. With most people now using apps, online services or phone banking, the group is closing a number of branches.
Customers affected by the closures are encouraged to use banking hubs in their area. These are shared banking locations on the high street where everyday banking can be done in person.
Alternative banking options
At banking hubs, customers can pay in and withdraw cash, check their balance, pay some bills and top up gas and electricity. They may also be able to speak to a community banker.
Customers with accounts at Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland can do their banking at any of their branches.
