Keep lettuce fresh for two weeks with simple storage change

A simple storage change could keep lettuce fresh for up to two weeks, according to a TikTok user whose trick has won praise from hundreds of viewers.

Lettuce is a dietary staple, packed with potassium, vitamin C, magnesium, calcium and iron, while containing no fat, no cholesterol and just 15 calories per 100g. Yet the leafy greens are known for spoiling quickly, turning from crisp to limp almost overnight.

The paper towel and ziplock bag method

TikTok user Chores With Mom demonstrates placing a folded paper towel into a ziplock bag, creased side down, to form a sort of bag liner. She advises washing and prepping the lettuce before loading it into the bag, packing it in tightly.

“Really pack it in. You can fit a few heads of lettuce in there without a problem,” she explains. “Fold the paper towel over the top if you can, so the lettuce on top is covered too. [Then] squeeze all the air out. Really get in there! Store it like this and you'll have salad for up to two weeks.”

Viewers react to the hack

Hundreds of impressed viewers commented on the video, with many pledging to try the trick themselves. One user said: “We do this. The paper towel catches the moisture.”

Another added: “Thanks for the tip! Also, don't cut it until you're ready to use it. I find it doesn't brown as fast if I use it as I need it.” A third wrote: “Oh, I will so start doing that. I eat salad every day. Thanks so much,” while a fourth described the hack as “awesomely wonderful”.
