Heated clothes airers are becoming increasingly popular in the UK as a cost-effective way to dry laundry without high energy bills. According to recent tests, a standard heated airer costs around 9p per hour to run, based on the January 2026 default energy tariff of 27.69p per kWh. This makes them a cheaper alternative to tumble dryers, though drying times can vary.
The tests involved 17 different models, with drying times measured by weighing laundry every 30 minutes. Room temperature was kept at a steady 19-20°C. The best overall performer was the Lakeland Dry:Soon Deluxe 3-tier heated airer with cover, while the Black+Decker heated winged clothes airer was named the best budget option. For fast drying, the Minky SureDri heat pod drying system stood out, but it costs about 25p per hour to run due to its higher wattage.
Despite their efficiency, heated airers are not instant. Most take a full afternoon or more to dry a load, and running costs add up over time. However, they remain a popular choice for those looking to save money and energy compared to traditional drying methods.
