Fruit flies are a genuine nuisance in countless households, especially during the summer months. They appear to emerge from thin air in kitchens, quickly descend on nearby food, and multiply at an alarming rate. Not only are they an unsightly annoyance, but they can also contaminate food, leading to unnecessary waste. As temperatures rise, many people leave kitchen windows and doors open, which can draw even more fruit flies indoors.
Simple homemade trap
Cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie has shared her method for stopping fruit flies from taking over her kitchen. She relies on just two common household staples: white vinegar and washing-up liquid, both of which most people will already have in their cupboards.
Using an old jar, Lynsey combines the two ingredients before placing her trap on the kitchen windowsill. She explained: "Fill a recycled jar with a splash of white vinegar and a few drops of washing-up liquid, then make a few small holes in the lid. The vinegar attracts the fruit flies, while the washing-up liquid breaks the surface tension so they become trapped. Place it near your fruit bowl or food waste bin for the best results. Simple, inexpensive and surprisingly effective!"
Other prevention methods
Beyond using the trap, it is crucial to consistently clear away any overripe fruits or vegetables from the kitchen counter, as these can attract fruit flies. Regularly wipe down worktops, tables and kitchen cupboards to stop any sticky residue from accumulating. Keep kitchen sinks clean, and bin any rotting fruit without delay.
Empty the kitchen bin often, especially during warmer months, and monitor houseplants carefully to ensure fruit flies have not laid eggs in them. The flies can emerge from moist soil, so it is recommended to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
