Households across the UK pay £180 a year for a TV Licence, but those who do not watch live television or use BBC iPlayer may be entitled to a full refund. According to the government website, a licence is required to watch or record programmes on a TV, computer or other device as they are broadcast, and to watch on-demand BBC programmes on iPlayer.
Who needs a TV Licence
A TV Licence is needed if you watch or record live TV on any channel or service, or if you use BBC iPlayer. However, the government has confirmed that a licence is not required for streaming services such as Netflix and Disney Plus, on-demand TV through services like All 4 and Amazon Prime Video, videos on websites like YouTube, or videos and DVDs.
If you do not watch live TV and only use streaming services or YouTube, you do not need a TV Licence and can apply for a refund on the TV Licensing website.
Free and discounted licences
Millions of people in the UK may be eligible for a free or discounted licence. If you are aged 75 or over and receive Pension Credit, or live with a partner who receives Pension Credit, you can get a free TV Licence. You only need one licence per household, even if you use more than one device, and it covers everyone living at your address.
Government guidance states: "You can apply when you’re 74 if you already get Pension Credit. You'll still need to pay for your licence until the end of the month before your 75th birthday. After that you'll be covered by your free licence."
Other concessions and how to apply
Those in residential care or sheltered accommodation can get a TV Licence for £7.50, provided they are retired and over 60, or disabled. A 50% discount is available for people who are registered blind or live with someone who is, provided the licence is in the blind person's name.
Applications for a free licence can be made online at www.tvlicensing.co.uk or by phone at 0300 790 6071. Most people spread the cost by paying by Direct Debit, which is automatic, though a one-off payment is also possible. Watching or recording live TV without a licence can result in a fine of up to £1,000.
