Households could save up to £173 a year by switching to a fixed energy deal, according to new analysis.

The analysis, carried out by the comparison site Energy Helpline, found that the average household could reduce their annual energy bill by £173 by moving from a standard variable tariff to the cheapest fixed deal on the market.
This would mean a typical dual-fuel customer paying by direct debit could cut their yearly costs from £1,254 to £1,081.
How the savings are calculated
The figures are based on the difference between the average standard variable tariff, which is the default deal that customers are placed on if they do not switch, and the cheapest fixed tariff currently available.
Energy Helpline said that fixed deals are currently around £173 cheaper than standard variable tariffs, and that customers who have never switched before could make significant savings.

The comparison site is urging households to check their current energy deal and consider switching to a fixed tariff, particularly as winter approaches and energy usage typically increases.
It noted that many customers remain on standard variable tariffs, despite the availability of cheaper fixed deals, and that switching takes only a few minutes and can be done online.
