Frontline workers eligible for a Blue Light Card can access energy-switching gift card incentives worth up to £85, as households await the next energy price cap announcement from Ofgem.
The offers apply to selected tariffs for those in the NHS, emergency services, social care, teaching and the armed forces, among others. The incentives arrive as Ofgem is due to publish the next energy price cap on Wednesday, August 26, with the new limit coming into force from October 1.
Current price cap and offers
The cap sets the maximum rates suppliers can charge customers on default tariffs. At present it stands at £1,862 a year for a typical household paying by Direct Debit, which is already 13% higher than the previous quarter. Ofgem has confirmed the next cap will be published by August 26, but the final figure depends on the regulator’s calculations.
Blue Light Card says members can currently access a range of incentives when switching supplier, including:
- ScottishPower: An £85 Amazon gift card when switching to an eligible dual-fuel tariff.
- EDF: A £55 gift card for an eligible dual-fuel tariff, with customers able to choose from Amazon, Merlin, Aldi, Tesco, ASOS or The Restaurant Group.
- So Energy: A £40 Amazon gift card when switching to an eligible one or two-year fixed tariff.
- Uswitch: A £50 Amazon gift card when choosing an eligible dual-fuel tariff.
Membership and warnings
The deals are available to eligible Blue Light Card members, with terms and conditions applying. Blue Light Card said the EDF offer is exclusive to its members and is available to both new and existing customers. A Blue Light Card membership costs £4.99 and unlocks access to various discounts and offers.
Steffie Brader, Head of Strategic Partnerships at Blue Light Card, said: “With autumn approaching and many frontline workers concerned about rising energy bills, it’s more important than ever to take a few simple steps to make sure you’re not paying more than you need to.” She added: “Reviewing your current tariff and checking whether there’s a better option for your household could help reduce monthly costs.”
However, Blue Light Card has warned people not to switch purely to secure a gift card. Households are being urged to compare the full cost of any tariff, including unit rates and standing charges, before making a decision.
Eligibility and impact
Ofgem also says some customers may be able to pay less by changing tariff or payment method, though what you actually pay depends on usage, your area and meter type. The regulator stresses that the cap is not a limit on a household’s total bill - it caps the rates suppliers can charge, so higher usage still means a higher overall cost.
Blue Light Card says eligibility includes NHS staff, police officers, firefighters, ambulance workers, teachers, members of the armed forces, pharmacists, optometrists, dental practice staff, prison and probation workers, coastguards and lifeboat crews, among others. The organisation said its members saved more than £500 million through its offers during 2025.
The energy switching incentives are commercial offers, and Blue Light Card may receive commission if members switch via some links, with no extra cost to the customer. The energy deals were correct at the time of the announcement and may change. Households can check their current tariff and compare it with alternatives before deciding whether switching is worthwhile.
