DWP confirms Winter Fuel Payment 2026 payment months

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that most Winter Fuel Payment 2026 payments in England and Wales will be made automatically in November or December, with amounts ranging from £100 to £300.

The annual, tax-free lump sum is awarded to people in England and Wales to help with heating costs during the winter months. To qualify, recipients must have been born on or before June 27, 1960, according to the UK government.

Payment dates and notification

In its most recent update on the government website, the DWP stated that most payments are made automatically in November or December. Eligible pensioners should receive a letter informing them of how much they will get and which bank account it will be paid into, usually the same account as their State Pension or other benefits.

If a letter is not received or the money has not appeared in the account by January 27, 2027, recipients should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre, according to the Liverpool Echo.

How the amount is calculated

The amount a person receives is determined by when they were born and their circumstances during the "qualifying week", which runs from September 21 to 27, 2026. Any money received will not affect other benefits.
