DWP confirms £300 Winter Fuel Payments due in November or December

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that most eligible recipients of the Winter Fuel Payment will receive their payments automatically in November or December 2026. The payments, worth between £100 and £300, are designed to help cover heating bills for winter 2026 to 2027.

To qualify, you must have been born on or before June 27, 1960, and reside in Wales or England. The exact amount you receive depends on your date of birth and your circumstances during the 'qualifying week' of September 21-27, 2026.

Income threshold and reclaim rules

There is an income threshold that could affect your payment. If your annual income exceeds £35,000, HMRC will reclaim your Winter Fuel Payment. You can check whether your income surpasses this threshold on the government's website.

Most eligible recipients will receive the payment automatically, but if you believe you qualify and do not receive a letter, you should check whether you need to submit a claim.

Payment dates and letters

If you are eligible, you will receive a letter in October or November confirming the amount you are due to receive. The majority of eligible recipients will be paid in November or December 2026.

Who is not eligible

You will not be eligible if you were visiting England, Wales or Northern Ireland during the qualifying week but usually live elsewhere, or if you were in hospital receiving free treatment for the whole of the qualifying week and the year before that. You also will not qualify if you need permission to enter the UK and your granted leave says you cannot claim public funds, or if you were in prison for the whole of the qualifying week.

You can receive a Winter Fuel Payment if you live in a care home, unless you get Universal Credit, Pension Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and you lived in a care home for the whole time from June 29, 2026, or earlier.

Any payment you receive will have no bearing on your other benefits. Further details can be found on the UK Government's website.
