Dunelm has issued an urgent safety warning to customers after identifying that 27 doorstop products may contain asbestos. The items were sold both online and in stores between January 2019 and February 2026.
The retailer stated on its website: "We have identified a safety and non-compliance issue with the doorstops. The sand sealed within the product may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos. Asbestos is a banned substance because it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure."
Dunelm has provided clear instructions for customers who have purchased an affected product. They advise: "If you've bought an affected product, please stop using it immediately. If the product is undamaged, place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag and double-tape it securely. If the product is damaged and the sand inside is accessible, gather the sand using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a mask. Double-bag the sand and the rest of the product in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double tape it securely, along with the gloves, mask and cloths."
Customers are instructed to keep people away from any area where sand has been spilt until it is cleaned. The sealed bag can be disposed of in general household waste or returned to any Dunelm store for a full refund.
The government's official recall notice confirms the products originated from China and fail to comply with the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. The notice states: "The products present a risk to health as the sand inside the doorstops may be contaminated with a quantity of asbestos. Corrective action: The products have been withdrawn from the market and recalled from end users by Dunelm."
