Co-op Mayo Tops UK Taste Test, Cheaper Than Hellmann's

Consumer champion Which? has named Co-op's own-brand mayonnaise the best in the UK, beating big-name brands like Hellmann's and Heinz. The supermarket mayo costs £1.35 for 500ml, which is £1.10 cheaper than Hellmann's 430ml bottle at £2.45.

In a blind taste test conducted in May 2026, 62 participants sampled nine different mayonnaises, including seven supermarket own brands and two major brands. Co-op's mayo scored highest overall, with testers praising its appetising appearance, creamy texture, and tangy flavour. Two-thirds of tasters found its thickness just right, and most enjoyed its tartness.

Sainsbury's own-brand mayo also earned a Best Buy rating, described as a 'great-tasting, creamy mayo that looks good too'. More than two-thirds of testers liked its thickness, and over half enjoyed its strength of flavour and sharpness. It costs £1 for 500ml.

Hellmann's outperformed Heinz among the branded mayos, but still fell short of the top supermarket offerings. Most testers liked its appearance, creamy texture, and thickness, but over a third found the flavour too weak, and more than four in ten said it lacked sharpness. Heinz ranked lower, with nearly half of testers finding its flavour and sharpness lacking.

Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services, said: 'While many of us automatically reach for Hellmann's or Heinz to dip our chips, our rigorous blind taste test shows you can get a better dollop for half the price. Co-op and Sainsbury's both trounced the big brands to take our coveted top spots, proving that supermarket own-label mayo can deliver the ultimate combination of rich creaminess and tangy flavour.'
