Clover spreads withdrawn from UK supermarkets over taste and odour issues
Clover spreads withdrawn over taste and odour concerns

Dairy manufacturer Clover has voluntarily withdrawn select batches of its Clover and Clover Light spreads from supermarket shelves following concerns over the product's "taste and odour". The company has stressed that the affected products remain safe to consume.

The move came after shoppers on Reddit reported their spread had recently tasted like a "mix of soap and sick". One posted: "Has anyone else bought clover or any other butter/butter alternatives this past week and noticed the taste is completely off?"

Shoppers report unusual flavour

Another consumer noticed a "big empty space" in their local shop where the familiar spread had previously been stocked. The worried customer thought their bread had "gone mouldy" when using the Clover.

A third consumer said: "I've got a tub of Clover bought within the last few weeks, well within expiry (at least 1+ month), that does not taste right, pretty much exactly as you described."

Company response and advice

Taking to social media, Clover acknowledged there was a "flavour issue" that had been detected in "certain batches" of the spread. It nevertheless assured customers the product remains "safe to eat", reports Lancs Live.

The firm has advised shoppers who have bought the affected products to dispose of them. In a statement to LancsLive, it said: "We have voluntarily withdrawn select batches of Clover and Clover Light following the identification of an issue which may affect its taste and odour."

"While the product remains safe to consume, it does not meet our quality standards. We have worked closely with retailers to remove affected stock from sale and apologise for any inconvenience caused."
