The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an urgent recall for pre-packaged fruit items sold at major UK supermarkets, including ASDA, Morrisons, M&S, Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Waitrose, due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall, announced on Tuesday, follows testing that detected Salmonella in apples and kiwi used by supplier PrepWorld.
Affected products include ready-to-eat fruit pots and snack packs with best-before or use-by dates of 23 or 24 June. Specific items include ASDA's 220g Pink Lady Apple, Mango, Strawberry & Blueberry fruit pot (£2.75); Morrisons' 220g Kiwi, Melon & Strawberries pack (£2.50); and Tesco's four items: 250g Melon, Kiwi & Strawberry pots, 100g Kiwi Fruit Pot, 290g Fruit Kebabs, and 125g Melon, Kiwi & Strawberry packs.
Sainsbury's has recalled three products: 220g Melon, Kiwi & Strawberry pots, Orange & Kiwi 240g packs, and Pink Lady Apple & Grape 240g packs (use-by 23 June). M&S has recalled 90g Café Pink Lady Apple slices, 90g Pink Lady Apple packs, and 225g Pink Lady Apple Slices (use-by 24 June). Waitrose has pulled its 115g Pink Lady Apple and Grapes packs (best-before 23 June).
The FSA advises consumers not to eat the affected products and to return them to the store for a full refund. Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhoea, and stomach cramps, with young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals at higher risk. Symptoms typically appear within hours to days of consumption.
