Adding Worcestershire sauce to cheese on toast can significantly enhance its flavour, according to a recent tip. The sauce's acidic nature balances the richness of the cheese, making it feel lighter and improving the overall taste.
Why Worcestershire sauce works
Worcestershire sauce is a complex condiment inspired by South Asian fermented fish sauces. Its fermentation process and anchovies provide a powerful umami kick that enriches savoury, salty, creamy foods like cheese. The sauce also contains tangy vinegar and sweet molasses, adding complementary flavours.
How to add it
The method depends on how you add cheese to your toast. For grated cheese, drizzle the sauce over the cheese before melting. For sliced cheese, add the sauce after melting so it can be absorbed better, as it won't combine with a thick slice during melting.
One approach involves using sourdough bread, topping it with grated mozzarella and cheddar, then drizzling Worcestershire sauce before placing it in an air fryer for three to five minutes at 150C. The sauce can also be mixed with the grated cheese in a bowl or brushed onto the toast before adding the cheese.
