The cheapest place to buy petrol in Greater Manchester today (Monday, September 28) is at the Costco Wholesale garage on The Broadway in Oldham, where a litre of unleaded costs 163.9p. For diesel, the lowest price is at the Asda garage on Atherleigh Way in Leigh, charging 185.7p per litre.
According to the latest data supplied by retailers, a driver in an average family car could save up to £20 by filling up at the cheapest forecourt compared to the most expensive petrol station in the region. Filling a typical 55-litre tank with petrol at the Costco garage would cost £90.
Diesel reaches highest level in UK history
The figures come as the average price of a litre of diesel has reached the highest level in UK history. Analysis of fuel prices by the RAC shows that a litre of diesel now stands at 199.18p, meaning the cost to fill an average family car is close to £100 – £31 more than it was before the start of the Iran conflict.
The RAC's head of policy, Simon Williams, said that with prices now higher than the previous record of 199.09p in June 2022, diesel costs had entered 'uncharted territory'.
"This spells pain not only at the pumps for drivers, but for everyone who buys goods or services that rely on diesel lorries and vans; undoubtedly these increased costs will be passed on to consumers," he said. "Petrol prices, too, are continuing to rise. A litre of unleaded stands at 174.13p on average, 41p more than at the start of the war – taking the cost of a full tank to nearly £96."
Wider impact and possible relief
Mr Williams added that only a 'sustained lower oil price' would bring prices down, with 'suggestions of a renewed deal to end the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz' offering 'a slight glimmer of hope for drivers'. The cost of diesel has continued to rise following the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran, alongside continued hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.
Williams continued: "The UK might have limited leverage when it comes to ending the US/Iran war and ultimately bringing oil prices down, but the Government could take steps to ease the burden on drivers by lowering fuel duty further or reducing VAT."
