Cardiff restaurant Bodega to close after three years
Cardiff restaurant Bodega to close after three years

Bodega, a popular Cardiff restaurant, has announced it will close its doors after three years of operation, with its final service scheduled for Saturday, November 14.

Founded by hospitality operators Benito and Sophie Martinez, Bodega is located on Clearwater Way and opened in 2023. The venue combined Mediterranean-inspired small plates, live-fire cooking and an ambitious wine offering with relaxed, experience-led hospitality.

Reasons Behind the Closure

The decision to close follows careful consideration by Benito and Sophie, who say the increasingly challenging environment for independent hospitality businesses has made the current operation difficult to sustain. Sophie and Benito, owners of Fire & Wine Group, wrote on the venue's social media that the decision was "incredibly difficult".

They said: "Like many independent hospitality businesses, we're operating in an increasingly challenging environment, and we've had to make some difficult decisions about where to focus our energy and investment."

Team and Brand Future

While the Bodega brand will live on through festival appearances and events next year, the team working at the restaurant will move to sister venues Park Side Kitchen and Bakery, based next door to the existing Bodega site, and The Priory in Caerleon.

They thanked their staff and customers and went on to state the next step for the Bodega team. They said: "While it's incredibly sad to be saying goodbye to Bodega's current home, this isn't goodbye to Bodega altogether."

"We already have festival appearances booked for next year, and we're excited to explore what the next chapter might look like. The restaurant might be closing, but our love for the concept certainly isn't going anywhere."

Legacy and Customer Support

Over the past three years, the restaurant has established a loyal following, becoming known for its regularly changing menus, monthly chef-hosted tasting dinners and an extensive wine offering of more than 40 wines by the glass, including rare and premium bottles.

Bodega is not the first establishment to announce its closure this autumn. Earlier in October, Neighbourhood in Riverside announced their time in the city had come to an end, while in the summer, city centre bar Walkabout said it was shutting.

Bodega will continue welcoming guests until its final service on Saturday, November 14 and customers with outstanding Bodega gift vouchers will be able to redeem them at either The Priory or Park Side Kitchen.
