Households on low incomes or receiving pensions may be eligible for a £150 reduction on their winter heating bills from October, under the Warm Home Discount Scheme. The one-off payment is applied directly to the electricity bill by the supplier, rather than being paid to the customer in cash.
How the discount works
All domestic energy suppliers with more than 1,000 customers are required to provide an annual bill discount to eligible households. A total of 24 suppliers are obligated to give the £150 boost, including British Gas, Octopus, EON and EDF.
The money should be applied automatically if you are eligible, and paid between October and March. However, customers in Scotland may need to apply directly to their energy supplier.
Eligibility criteria
To receive the discount, three conditions must be met as of August 23, 2026, which makes you part of the ‘core group’. Your energy supplier must be part of the scheme, your name or your partner’s must be on the electricity bill, and you or your partner must receive certain means-tested benefits.
The qualifying means-tested benefits are Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and Pension Credit.

If you haven't received a letter by mid-January and you think you're eligible, you can contact the Warm Home Discount helpline on 0800 030 9322. You should make sure you get in touch with the helpline by 26 February 2027.
