Asda Extra Special Greek Koroneiki Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been crowned the best supermarket olive oil of 2026, beating rivals including Filippo Berio. The £8 bottle, made from 100% Greek olives, impressed a food critic from The Independent with its ripe, fruity flavour and subtle spicy undertones.
The critic praised the oil for being “fruity and slightly creamy with bitter and nutty notes,” adding that it has a “rich, balanced” taste with a “rocket-like peppery finish.” The oil’s blue marbled label also stood out among competitors.
Aldi Specially Selected P.D.O Castel Del Monte extra virgin olive oil (£5.49) took second place, followed by Belazu early harvest extra virgin olive oil (£13.50) in third. Filippo Berio Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (£10) placed fourth.
Last year, Senior Lifestyle reporter Angela Patrone rated Asda’s own-brand olive oil eight out of ten, noting its fresh notes of green herbs and tomato plants and a lasting peppery finish. However, her top pick was Waitrose Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which scored a perfect ten, praised for its subtle yet peppery character and smooth aftertaste, despite its £8.50 per litre price tag.
Olive oil sommelier Mazen Assaf advised consumers to choose bottles in tin or dark glass to protect against heat, oxygen, and light. He recommended single-origin oils from specific regions and looking for the olive variety on the label to ensure authenticity.
