Barclays and Tesco have announced a new fuel cashback offer designed to help drivers manage rising motoring expenses. From Friday, May 1, through July 31, Barclays customers using an eligible personal debit card at Tesco fuel stations can earn 5% cashback on purchases between £5 and £200. The cashback is capped at £10 per calendar month per customer, based on the purchase date rather than when the cashback is received.
Timing and Context
The offer launches just before the early May bank holiday, when many drivers are expected to hit the roads. It comes amid rising fuel prices partly driven by the conflict in the Middle East. Barclays’ latest consumer spend report shows that while 67% of UK adults remain confident in their household finances and 71% can live within their means, fuel spending is a key driver of increased essential expenditure.
Additional Offers and Eligibility
Alongside the fuel cashback, Barclays is running a £200 switching deal for new customers who open a current account via the Barclays app by May 28. The fuel offer is available to Blue Rewards, Premier, and eligible Barclaycard customers who register for cashback rewards in the Barclays app. Eligible cards include those linked to Barclays basic current accounts, Barclays Bank accounts, Premier current accounts, Student Additions/Higher Education accounts, or Wealth current accounts. Customers must be aged 18 or over and UK residents.
Cashback is typically credited one to two working days after the fuel transaction leaves the account, appearing as “Barclays Fuel CB” on the statement. Exclusions apply, such as Esso filling stations not being included. Vim Maru, chief executive of Barclays UK, said: “Through our partnership with Tesco, we’re able to offer savings on fuel at a time when costs are rising, helping customers make their money go that bit further.” Tesco UK chief executive Ashwin Prasad added: “Thanks to our partnership with Barclays, Tesco shoppers across the country will now be able to get cashback when they fill up their tank at Tesco using their Barclays debit card.”
