White socks that have turned dingy and grey can be restored to their original brightness by adding bicarbonate of soda to the washing machine, according to a laundry specialist. The method offers a natural alternative to bleach-based products.
Why bicarbonate of soda works
Mark Walker, a laundry specialist from Denver Wash and Fold, explained that the secret to reviving white socks does not rely on aggressive chemicals. He said: "If you're not a bleach person, don't panic. There are plenty of ways to get white socks white again without harsh chemicals. Baking soda is one great DIY option."
Bicarbonate of soda is alkaline, which means it can counteract acidic marks caused by body oils, bacteria or dirt, helping to dissolve them. Its granular consistency also acts as a gentle abrasive, physically lifting stains from the fabric during the wash cycle.
Adding bicarbonate of soda to the machine also softens the water and boosts the effectiveness of regular detergent, resulting in noticeably brighter socks.
How to restore socks naturally
To begin, fill a clean basin with tepid water and add a generous quantity of bicarbonate of soda. Place the grubby white socks in the water and leave them to soak for three to four hours.
After soaking, squeeze out any excess water and put the socks into the washing machine, adding a cup of baking soda alongside the usual detergent in the machine's drawer. For extra softness, pour white vinegar into the fabric softener compartment, as it naturally loosens the fibres.
Drying for best results
Once the wash cycle is complete, hang the socks outside to dry in natural sunlight. The ultraviolet rays act as a natural bleaching agent, brightening the fabric while also killing lingering bacteria.
If outdoor drying is not possible, tumble dry on a low, gentle setting, or drape the socks over an indoor drying rack in a well-aired room close to an open window. Once fully dried, the socks should look as bright and white as the day they were first bought.
