Amazon has removed two children's products from sale after the Office for Product Safety and Standards identified serious safety risks. The Bukbas Dinosaur Swim Ring, manufactured in China and sold via Amazon, has been withdrawn because it "presents a serious risk of drowning" due to its toy-like design and lack of bright colouring.
Swim ring fails safety standards
The Office confirmed that the import has been rejected at the border and that the listing has been removed by Amazon. It added: "The product presents a serious risk of drowning because it has the design and appearance of a toy which is not permitted under EN 13138-3, as it increases the likelihood of incorrect usage. Incorrect usage could lead to the child drowning. Additionally, swim seats should be manufactured in bright colours that contrast with the water surface to ensure visibility."
"This product does not provide sufficient contrast to the water surface to make it readily visible at all times." The product fails to comply with the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.
E-bike charger poses fire and shock risk
Amazon has also been forced to pull the Teashow 6V Battery Charger for Children's E-Bikes from sale this week. The product "presents a high risk of fire and electric shock, as it is inadequately insulated".
The Office for Product Safety and Standards explained: "The product presents a high risk of electric shock and fire because it has inadequate insulation between the primary and secondary circuits. Internal examination identified creepage and clearance distances of less than 1.0 mm within the transformer, significantly below the minimum required distances, and the product failed the electric strength test."
Poor internal construction was also identified, including inadequately secured wiring and poor soldering, which could result in a short circuit and fire. As a result, users could receive an electric shock from accessible parts or the product could overheat and catch fire. "The product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016."
Anyone who owns the product is being urged to stop using it immediately and get in touch with the distributor they purchased from to seek a remedy.
