Aldi's fish fingers have come out on top in a taste test, scoring 10/10 and beating Birds Eye and other supermarket rivals. The winning brand had a golden, crunchy batter and a generous amount of fish, according to the review.
Fish fingers are a staple in freezers across the UK, making an ideal addition to sandwiches, dinners and lunches. Shoppers can choose from supermarket own-brands or branded options, with Birds Eye among the most popular but typically more pricey than non-branded varieties.
How the fish fingers were tested
A range of fish fingers were put to the test to see if supermarket options are better than the brand in both taste and price. All fish fingers were cooked according to their oven instructions.
Sainsbury's came at the bottom of the rankings with a 3/10 score. Despite having the darkest colour and a nice-tasting batter, the fish was overly chewy and left a very odd, metallic taste afterwards.
Supermarket own-brands ranked
Asda's fish fingers scored 4/10, with the batter falling off the fish when taken off the baking tray, though the taste was pleasant and the fish was only slightly too chewy. Tesco came next with 5/10, as the fish fingers came out of the oven wonky, one of the few to get slightly burnt, and had more batter than fish with a slightly greasy taste.
Lidl scored 7/10, with an ideal golden batter that came slightly loose upon eating, but a nice-tasting fish that wasn't as chewy as others ranking before it.
Branded and premium options
Birds Eye, priced at £4.25 from Sainsbury's, scored 8/10. The branded fish finger split while cooking like the Asda ones, but the batter stayed on better than many others, and it included a delicate fish that wasn't chewy.
Marks and Spencer came in slightly ahead with 9/10, as it contained lots of fish, was buttery and not chewy, and had a pleasant crispiness to the batter that stayed on the fish.
Aldi took the top spot with a 10/10 score. Its fish fingers had a golden, crunchy batter that stayed on the fish, with thick fish and a generous amount. They had a nice crunch and were far from soggy, and were found to be far better than Birds Eye.
