Own-brand Yorkshire puddings from Aldi and Lidl have topped a Which? taste test, scoring 79/100 and beating well-known brands such as Aunt Bessie's, as well as premium supermarkets like Waitrose and M&S.
The consumer group's blind panel of 69 taste-testers named the Aldi Specially Selected Large Beef Dripping Yorkshire Puddings and the Lidl Deluxe Beef Dripping Yorkshire Puddings as joint winners, with both priced at £1.99.
How the top puddings scored
Morrisons The Best Yorkshire Puddings with Beef Dripping (£3.60 for 240g) followed closely with a score of 75/100, while Aunt Bessie's Beef Dripping Yorkshire Puddings (£3 for 180g) took third place with 72/100.
Per pudding, Aunt Bessie's works out pricier than both Lidl and Aldi, costing around 75p per pudding compared with about 33p per pudding for the winning versions.
Other supermarket contenders
Asda's Exceptional Beef Dripping Yorkshire Puddings came in sixth place, scoring 76/100 for the £2.37 pack of six, followed by Tesco Finest Beef Dripping Yorkshire Puddings with 71/100 and costing £2.55 for six.
Each Yorkshire pudding was assessed and scored based on flavour, texture, appearance and crispiness. The Iceland Luxury Beef Dripping Yorkshire Puddings (£2 for 160g) were the lowest-scoring on the list but still achieved 69/100.
Cheap brands often win
Which? has consistently taste-tested common supermarket items, and cheap versions often beat well-known brands. This was recently the case with instant coffee, with M&S and Waitrose versions beating Kenco and Nescafé, and a tomato soup test in which a Sainsbury's own-brand product beat Heinz.
