Free Bus Pass Rules Vary by Region
The free bus pass scheme has different rules across the UK and can vary between councils and constituent nations. In Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, people can apply when they turn 60. In England, applicants must be of state pension age, except in London, where a free bus pass is available at 60.
Coach and Rail Discounts
Over 60s in England and Wales can buy a Senior Coachcard for £30 (plus £3 postage and packing) to get a third off National Express coach fares. Additional discounts include £15 anywhere returns on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays when booked three or more days in advance, plus 15% off adult Fully Flexible fares.
A Senior Railcard costs £35 per year or £80 for three years, offering savings on a wide range of tickets, including First Class, Standard, Advance, and off-peak bookings – except for morning peak-time journeys in London and the South East.
Free Tube Travel in London
Those over 60 can get a 60 London Oyster Photocard, allowing free travel on TfL services from 9am on weekdays and anytime at weekends and bank holidays. This is useful for London residents and visitors to the capital alike.
