An 89p budget pumpkin spice latte has been put to the test against Starbucks' iconic offering, and the cheaper option failed to match the coffee chain's rich, creamy flavour. Daily Record fashion and beauty writer Rachel Williams compared the two instant drinks side by side to see if a more affordable alternative could dethrone the seasonal favourite.
Williams, a self-confessed Starbucks fan, wanted to save money while still enjoying her favourite autumn beverage at home. A box of four Starbucks sachets costs around £2.15 at most supermarkets, working out at roughly 53p per drink. She then found Mokate Gold Premium Pumpkin Spice Latte at her local Home Bargains, priced at just 89p for eight sachets.
Side-by-side taste test
To ensure a fair comparison, Williams prepared both drinks at the same time, pouring a sachet of each into two mugs. She noted that the Starbucks powder looked like a proper autumnal mix with a rich seasonal scent, while the Mokate version appeared bland. After adding boiling water, both drinks frothed up nicely with smooth foam on top and no lumps.
Despite the similar appearance, the taste was markedly different. The Starbucks PSL was rich and creamy, tasting like pumpkin pie, with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and pumpkin coming through clearly. Made from the brand's own 100 percent Arabica beans, the instant version was smooth and velvety, matching the quality of the takeaway drink.
Budget version falls short
The Mokate Pumpkin Spice Latte, however, was underwhelming. Williams said the flavours were very muted, and despite the packaging stating that spices, ground ginger and cinnamon were used, the drink tasted watery overall. The texture was also thin, and after the bubbly top layer subsided, the colour looked lighter than Starbucks' milky, smooth consistency.
Williams concluded that, while the Mokate latte was not a terrible drink, its delicate nature was too underwhelming for someone who expects a bold and unforgettable PSL. She declared Starbucks the clear winner, saying its velvety coffee and creamy, rich flavours will remain her go-to all autumn long.
For those looking to save, a box of four Starbucks sticks is £2.15 at Sainsbury's, while Tesco is offering Clubcard users a deal at £1.60.
