Millions of British drivers face the prospect of a £70 penalty after research reveals that 84% of motorists are unfamiliar with a certain road marking. Drivers are frequently unaware that they've entered a bus gate until they receive a penalty charge notice (PCN) through their letterbox weeks later.
The alert emerges as local authorities persist in enforcing bus gates through camera surveillance, issuing penalties to unauthorised vehicles traversing restricted routes. A single bus gate in Preston has amassed over £3.7 million in fines since June 2024.
Why bus gates catch drivers out
Keith Hawes from Nationwide Vehicle Contracts has explained why bus gates persistently trap motorists, how to identify them and the steps to take if you've been caught. The majority of bus gates operate through camera enforcement. Motorists who enter without authorisation may receive a PCN by post.
Across numerous areas the penalty stands at £70, though local authorities often discount this to £35 provided the fine is settled within the early-payment window.

Keith said: "The fact that 84% of people don't know what a bus gate is shows why so many motorists continue to be caught out by them. Most drivers know what a bus lane looks like and understand the restrictions, but bus gates are far less familiar despite becoming increasingly common."
"Drivers should also be aware that some bus gates only operate during certain times of the day, while others are enforced 24 hours a day. It's important to check the signs carefully rather than assuming the rules are the same everywhere."
"If you're relying on a sat-nav, remember it isn't always up to date with local traffic restrictions. Road signs should always take priority, and taking a different route is far more preferable than receiving a fine a few weeks later."
How to identify a bus gate
"BUS GATE" markings painted on the road surface, blue circular signs indicating which vehicles are permitted to proceed (such as buses and cycles), time plates beneath signs showing when restrictions apply, and enforcement cameras monitoring the route are all indicators of a bus gate.
You cannot drive through a bus gate unless you are driving during permitted operational hours or are explicitly exempt.
