New Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has secured a significant early triumph without playing a match, as Dominik Szoboszlai is poised to sign a new long-term contract with the club. Reports from Hungary indicate the midfielder will put pen to paper on a fresh deal today, having reached an agreement following discussions with sporting director Richard Hughes. The Athletic has also confirmed that terms have been agreed for an extension, securing Szoboszlai's services with two years remaining on his existing contract.
Szoboszlai's Rise at Anfield
Szoboszlai has become one of Liverpool's most vital players since his arrival from RB Leipzig in 2023. After playing a crucial role in Liverpool's Premier League title success in 2025, he emerged as the outstanding player during a frustrating subsequent campaign, claiming the club's Player of the Season accolade. Some uncertainty surrounded his future at Anfield, with Real Madrid reportedly showing interest, but he now appears set to dispel any concerns.
Contract Negotiations
A fresh deal for Szoboszlai has been under negotiation for some time. In April, following the Merseyside derby, Szoboszlai told reporters: "As I said (a few weeks ago), there has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation. We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that. As you guys maybe know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let's see." He added: "Of course I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here, as I said many times; I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. I'm completely relaxed."
Pre-Season Preparations
Szoboszlai is among the players who have returned to pre-season training, giving Iraola his first look at his new squad this summer. Also joining the group is new arrival Jeremy Jacquet, with the club announcing he will wear the number five shirt at Anfield following Ibrahima Konate's exit.
