Michael Owen has suggested that Marcus Rashford could still have a future at Manchester United, with Michael Carrick potentially offering a lifeline as the forward's move to Barcelona remains in limbo.
Barcelona transfer doubts
The La Liga side, which paid £59.3 million for Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon, has yet to finalise a permanent deal for Rashford. Owen, speaking to Metro, noted that while a return to Old Trafford seems unlikely, Carrick's familiarity with Rashford could provide a glimmer of hope.
“If it was any other manager, then I would say it’s impossible,” Owen said. “The only chink of light is that it’s Michael Carrick and he knows him. If he really rates him, then is it beyond the realms? There might be a tiny chink of light, but I still think it’s very unlikely.”
Contract and fee details
Rashford has two years left on his Manchester United contract, with the club demanding £26 million for his transfer. Barcelona has not yet agreed to that fee, and Newcastle has ruled out a move due to wage demands. Rashford last played for United in 2024, scoring in a 4-0 win over Everton.
Arsenal as another option
Owen also floated the possibility of Rashford joining Arsenal, the newly crowned Premier League champions. “Arsenal are still searching for a centre forward, so it gives you another option up there,” he said. “On the left-hand side, Trossard and Martinelli are good, but they aren’t on Rashford’s level when he’s fit and firing.”
Owen added that Rashford's priority would be to stay at Barcelona, but if that fails, Arsenal could be a great option.
Rashford's season at Barcelona
Last season, Rashford scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona, earning a spot in Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad. He recently earned his 72nd cap for England in warm-up games against New Zealand and Costa Rica.
