Peter Murrell, the estranged husband of former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and former chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP), has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for embezzling £400,000 from party funds. The sentence, handed down by Judge Lord Young at the High Court in Edinburgh, was reduced from seven years due to Murrell's guilty plea.
Details of the Embezzlement
Murrell, who served as SNP chief executive for over two decades, used his position to divert hundreds of thousands of pounds for personal gain. The embezzled funds were spent on a wide range of items, including gifts for Sturgeon, expensive kitchen gadgets, and a motorhome that he parked beside his parents' house. The misuse of funds occurred over several years, with Murrell exploiting his role to bypass internal financial controls.
Judge's Remarks
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Lord Young described Murrell's actions as a 'significant breach of trust' and noted that he used his position at the top of the party to 'circumvent checks and balances'. The judge added that it is 'very difficult to get a clear picture for what drove [Murrell's] actions'. Murrell's defense team argued that he had been under significant stress, but the judge emphasized the seriousness of the crime.
Impact on SNP and Sturgeon
Nicola Sturgeon, who served as Scotland's First Minister for nine years and was married to Murrell at the time of the offenses, has denied any knowledge of her then-husband's crimes. The couple have since separated. The scandal has dealt a significant blow to the SNP, which has been in power in Scotland since 2007. Murrell oversaw the party's 2007 Holyrood election victory that began its reign, and the party recently won another victory in last month's Scottish elections. The case has raised questions about the party's internal oversight and governance.
Legal Proceedings
Murrell's sentencing concludes a lengthy investigation by Police Scotland. He was initially charged with embezzlement in 2023 and pleaded guilty earlier this year. The court heard that the embezzled funds were taken from party accounts between 2017 and 2023. The motorhome, purchased for around £100,000, was one of the most notable purchases. Murrell will serve his sentence at HMP Edinburgh.
