A new champagne bar is set to open in one of Aberdeen's historic buildings, bringing a 'social dining experience' to the city. Signs for Allegro have appeared at 150 Union Street, a category B-listed former bank that dates back to 1824. The building has housed bars and restaurants previously but has been empty since 2024 after cocktail venue Moka Bar & Kitchen departed.
Heritage-Led Concept
The upcoming venue aims to pay homage to the site's two-century-old history. The owners have said they do not want to 'reinvent' the iconic building but rather 'reopen it in a way that feels natural to the building.' Founded by Abi Williams and Temi Banjoko, Allegro is described as a totally new concept not found anywhere else. As of writing, the opening date has not yet been confirmed.
Atmosphere First
Allegro is designed as an 'atmosphere first' venue, allowing guests to come dressed casually or formally. Bringing together music, people, and food, it will reflect Aberdeen's people, culture, and rhythm. The space has been designed for multiple moments, ranging from casual drinks after work to celebrating special occasions and nights out with friends.
Signature Experiences
According to the Allegro website, the brand will be built around providing a 'welcoming' restaurant environment and a 'vibrant bar with a strong social atmosphere.' It will offer signature experiences including live music nights, social dining evenings for groups, and heritage-inspired nights that connect guests with the building's history. Seasonal events are also planned.
Community Excitement
After the venue shared the news on Instagram, locals expressed enthusiasm. One Aberdonian wrote: 'How exciting.' A second remarked: 'Love seeing another new place opening on Union street!' Another who had visited one of the building's previous venues said: 'Oh I remember the days well! Had my 18th birthday party there. Excited to see what comes next!'
Revitalising Union Street
Despite a few empty units on Aberdeen's once thriving Union Street, there have been several new openings this year. Notably, a 'first of its kind' wellness café, Kaizen, opened at 500 Union Street at the end of May, offering a clean menu of build-your-own bowls, smoothies, and coffee with no sugars or preservatives. Additionally, premium smash burger bar Chilo's opened its first city outlet at 401-405 Union Street, taking over the unit that once housed The Essence Indian Cuisine restaurant.
