Neil Woodford Fined £4m by FCA Over Misconduct

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has fined former star fund manager Neil Woodford £4 million for misleading investors and failing to manage conflicts of interest. The penalty relates to his conduct between 2014 and 2017, when he managed the Woodford Equity Income Fund.

Misleading Statements

The FCA found that Woodford made misleading statements about the performance and liquidity of his fund. He claimed the fund was performing well and that it had sufficient liquidity to meet investor redemptions, when in fact it was struggling with illiquid assets.

Conflicts of Interest

Woodford also failed to manage conflicts of interest properly. He invested in companies where he had personal holdings without adequately disclosing these interests to investors. The FCA stated that this lack of transparency undermined trust in the fund.

The fine comes after a long investigation into the collapse of the Woodford Equity Income Fund, which was suspended in 2019 after a wave of redemptions. Investors lost millions of pounds when the fund was eventually wound up.

FCA Statement

Mark Steward, the FCA's executive director of enforcement and market oversight, said: "Neil Woodford's conduct fell short of the standards we expect. His misleading statements and failure to manage conflicts of interest caused significant harm to investors."

The FCA also noted that Woodford had accepted the findings and agreed to pay the fine, which will be used to compensate affected investors.

Response from Woodford

In a statement, Woodford expressed regret for his actions but argued that the fund's collapse was largely due to unforeseen market conditions. He said he accepted the FCA's findings and hoped the compensation would help investors recover some of their losses.

The case highlights the importance of transparency and proper conflict management in the investment industry. The FCA has reiterated its commitment to holding fund managers accountable for their conduct.
