Naga Munchetty Leads BBC Breakfast Stars with Salary Increase
The BBC has released its yearly salary list for 2025 and 2026, revealing that Naga Munchetty, a main presenter on BBC Breakfast and BBC Radio 5 Live, has received a substantial pay increase. Her salary now falls in the £360,000-£364,999 band, up from £355,000-£359,999 the previous year. This places her eighth on the list of highest-paid on-air talent, a significant jump that contrasts with the fortunes of her co-stars.
Munchetty, 51, first joined BBC Breakfast as a stand-in presenter in 2009 and became a main presenter in 2014, hosting alongside Charlie Stayt ever since. In addition to her breakfast show duties, she presents her own show on BBC Radio 5 Live from Monday to Wednesday and has taken on other presenting roles within the corporation.
Co-Stars See Pay Cuts or Freezes
While Munchetty's salary rose, other BBC Breakfast presenters experienced reductions or stagnation. Jon Kay, 56, who became a main presenter in 2022 after joining as a stand-in in 2009, saw his salary drop to £225,000-£229,999 from £240,000-£244,999 the previous year. He now ranks 43rd on the list. Kay also contributes to Radio 4's Saturday Live, Any Answers, Pick of the Week, and Last Word.
Rachel Burden, 51, a stand-in presenter since 2015, also faced a decrease, with her salary falling to £215,000-£219,999 from £220,000-£224,999. She is ranked 46th. Burden's other roles include 5 Live Breakfast and the Cafe Hope podcast. Notably, she recently announced her departure from BBC Breakfast after 11 years, following schedule changes that ended Sunday morning broadcasts.
Sally Nugent and Charlie Stayt Hold Steady
Sally Nugent, 54, who joined BBC Breakfast in 2011 as a stand-in and became a main presenter in 2021, saw no change in her salary, remaining at £200,000-£204,999. She ranks 58th and hosts only BBC Breakfast, unlike some of her colleagues with additional radio roles.
Charlie Stayt, 64, the longest-serving main presenter, having joined in 2008, also experienced no change, with his salary staying at £190,000-£194,999. He ranks 65th and, like Nugent, focuses solely on BBC Breakfast.
BBC Salary Disclosure Context
The BBC is required to publish salaries for individuals—both on-air and off-air—who earn more than £178,000 from licence fee revenue. The list, published on 14 July, covers pay for 2025 and 2026 and does not include those paid through independent production companies or BBC Studios. The rankings are based on pay bands, starting with the highest earners.
Munchetty's increase stands out in a year when several colleagues faced cuts, highlighting the disparity in pay adjustments among BBC Breakfast's top talent. The full list includes other presenters such as Sarah Campbell, Roger Johnson, Ben Thompson, Nina Warhurst, Luxmy Gopal, Emma Vardy, and Lewis Vaughan Jones, who serve as stand-ins but earn below the disclosure threshold.
