Monzo App Down for Thousands in UK Outage

Thousands of Monzo customers were unable to access their accounts on Monday afternoon as the banking app suffered a widespread outage. The issue, which was first reported around 4pm, affected both mobile and online banking services. Normal service was resumed later in the evening after Monzo activated its backup system.

A spokesperson for Monzo confirmed the problem and said: “After identifying some issues, we instantly activated Monzo Stand-in - our fully independent backup bank. As a result customers can still make payments with their card, withdraw cash, freeze their card, send and receive bank transfers and more.” The company added that the app is now fully functional.

Many customers took to social media platform X to complain about the disruption. One user wrote: “How long is this going to take? I have bills etc to pay for.” Another said: “Any time frame of when the issue is gonna be fixed? I need to go shopping.” During the outage, a message on the app acknowledged the issue and assured users the company was working on a fix.

Customers affected by the outage are not automatically entitled to compensation. Whether they can claim depends on the severity of the impact, such as missed bill payments, and how quickly the bank resolved the issue. Monzo’s quick activation of its backup system may limit the duration of the disruption.
