Manchester United have confirmed a new two-year contract for goalkeeper Dermot Mee, whose previous deal expired earlier this week. The 23-year-old academy graduate will continue to provide support and competition for the first-team goalkeeping group.
Limited Senior Experience but Valued Squad Member
Mee has made 27 appearances for United's Under-21s but has limited senior experience. He made four appearances for Altrincham in the National League during the 2022/23 campaign and has also played for Trafford, Runcorn Linnets, and Witton Albion. Despite his limited minutes, Mee is seen as a valuable member of the first-team squad and is a regular participant in training.
Club Statement on Contract Extension
Announcing the contract extension, United said: "The academy graduate will continue to provide excellent support and competition for the goalkeeper group. The Birmingham-born stopper, who has represented Northern Ireland at youth level, has played a key role in first-team training in recent years, whilst representing United’s Under-21s side in competitive fixtures. The impressive 23-year-old is continuing to develop with this latest contract renewal a further reward for his contributions. Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Dermot on his new deal."
Goalkeeping Situation at Old Trafford
Fellow goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to leave United soon for another loan spell at Trabzonspor. Despite this, Mee is currently expected to be the fourth-choice goalkeeper next season. Senne Lammens established himself as the Reds' No.1 in September after Onana left for Trabzonspor. Altay Bayindir was briefly the first choice under Ruben Amorim before Lammens was introduced for the victory over Sunderland. Since then, Bayindir has become back-up to the Belgium international. Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton remains at United after he signed a new one-year contract at the beginning of June. The 40-year-old is seen as one of the leaders in the dressing room despite only making three senior appearances for the Reds since returning to the club in 2021.
