Ansar Younis, 41, of Hatherley Road, Sheffield, has been jailed for nine years after raping an unconscious woman in the city centre. The attack was witnessed by four girls who recorded the incident on their phones after their attempts to intervene were ignored.
Attack details and investigation
The assault occurred at 1.14am on September 20, 2025, in Sheffield city centre. Witnesses called an ambulance, which alerted South Yorkshire Police. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment, where an early evidence kit was used, providing forensic evidence.
According to police, four girls witnessed the assault and challenged Younis as it happened. When he ignored their attempts to stop him, they began filming to secure evidence. When officers arrived, one of the witnesses identified Younis, leading to his arrest. He was interviewed but made no comment.
Conviction and sentencing
Younis was charged with rape and remanded into custody. He denied the offence but was found guilty after a trial at Sheffield Crown Court on March 31, 2026. He was sentenced to nine years' imprisonment on July 2, 2026.
Detective Constable Sophie Windle, who led the investigation, said: “This was a horrific attack against a woman who did not and could not consent.” She praised the four girls, stating their evidence was “absolutely instrumental at trial”. Windle added: “These girls were upstanders, not bystanders. As soon as they realised what was happening they stepped in and they have helped put a rapist behind bars.”
