Liverpool Transfer News: Gomes Contact, Gakpo Update

Liverpool have reportedly made contact with Wolves regarding a move for midfielder Joao Gomes, according to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte. The 25-year-old Brazil international, valued at around £38 million, is seen as a potential target following Wolves' relegation from the Premier League.

Liverpool's Transfer Activity Under Andoni Iraola

Andoni Iraola's first summer at the Liverpool helm has been relatively slow-moving so far, but that looks set to change as the Reds target a return to Premier League title contention. Liverpool have already made two substantial additions: Jeremy Jacquet completed his pre-agreed move to Merseyside for £60 million, and the surprise signing of £34.5 million winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna.

Iraola is looking to stamp his own mark on the squad, and more business is expected. Mirror Football has dissected the latest rumblings around Anfield as the English giants look to step up their efforts in the transfer market.

Joao Gomes: A Potential Midfield Addition

Gomes, a 10-cap Brazil international, was previously touted for a move to Atletico Madrid, but a disagreement with agent Jorge Mendes saw the deal called off. That could create an opening for Liverpool to steal in. Globo Esporte has reported that both Liverpool and Manchester United have sounded Wolves out over a deal, enquiring about the cost. United are already close to adding Chelsea's Andrey Santos to their midfield, but their move for Atalanta's Ederson is reportedly on the verge of collapse over medical concerns, meaning they may still be in the market for an alternative.

Gomes holds a lot of appeal to Premier League clubs given his experience in England's top flight. The former Flamengo prospect maintained a strong reputation at Molineux despite the club's struggles in recent campaigns. While Liverpool's engine room doesn't appear in drastic need of a makeover, with Alexis Mac Allister linked to Real Madrid and Curtis Jones exploring a potential exit, that situation could change swiftly.

Liverpool Holding Firm on Cody Gakpo

Liverpool are reportedly "not opening the doors" to Cody Gakpo leaving Anfield this summer despite interest from Tottenham. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Spurs' top target for the wing position is Manchester City's Savinho, but Gakpo remains a desire for Tottenham. Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Romano said: "Guys, my understanding is the main names to take into consideration for Tottenham for the winger positions are Cody Gakpo, but at the moment Liverpool are yet to open doors to an exit, and Savinho. Savinho is a top target for Tottenham. These two players are considered priorities for Tottenham for the winger position."

Romano added: "I'm not saying they are joining, because this depends on negotiations, but Savinho is [target] number one, two and three because Tottenham already wanted one year ago. If you remember, in my videos I always told you this. Then Cody Gakpo is a desire of Tottenham but at the moment Liverpool are not opening the doors to an exit, so we have to be patient."

Speculation around Gakpo's future has increased since the Netherlands' exit from the World Cup, though he is expected to link up with Iraola's squad for pre-season shortly.
