Crosby Couple Charged with Cannabis Smuggling from Thailand

A young couple from Crosby, Merseyside, have been charged with smuggling cannabis from Thailand following a National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation. Craig Richard Bakker and Marnie Maxwell, both 24, were arrested on Wednesday, July 8 at Heathrow Airport after their luggage was found to contain 45kg of the class B drug, with an estimated street value of around £450,000.

Court Appearance and Remand

Bakker, of no fixed abode, and Maxwell, of Hillary Drive, Crosby, appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, July 9, where they were remanded in custody. The pair are accused of smuggling the cannabis from Thailand to the UK. They will next appear at Isleworth Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

NCA Investigation

The arrests were the result of an NCA investigation into drug smuggling operations. The agency has not disclosed further details about the operation at this time. The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat the illegal importation of controlled substances into the UK.
